MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:Things are progressing well within the club – we have had a huge increase in swimmers in the pool over winter which is great to see. Please keep and eye on the notice boards for swim meets that are relevant for your level and up and coming fundraising ventures being organized. Even though the Council is assisting us with the power, heat and lighting it is very important that we keep up the fundraising for club activities. The new committee are all settling in well to their respective roles. We are getting more and more organized. Our contact details are on the notice board at the end of the pool if you want to contact us. In a clear envelope also on the wall will be the committee minutes from each meeting if you are interested in reading them. Many thanks for all those parents that helped out with the swim camps and the Winter Swim Meet. Although the numbers were down slightly on last year the general feeling from the attending clubs was a very well run meet and they would be happy to return next year. Gerry Glover President |
Coaches Comment July 2004Winter Camps Steve and I would like to thank those parents that helped us put on some very successful camps over the July school holidays. These camps are an invaluable part of the program and will continue to be held at this time of the year for the foreseeable future. The next round of camps for most squads will be held over the Christmas holiday period in the build up to Waikato Champs. Hamilton Winter Meet Overall Steve and I were very pleased with the performances over the middle weekend of the holidays. We were pleased with the variety of events and distances entered over the weekend. Congratulations to all of you who achieved pb’s over the weekend especially swimmers who had been on camp in the week prior to the camp. It was really pleasing to see the progress being made in both technique and skill execution by the less experienced members of the team. With large numbers of swimmers attending events it is really important that our team cap is worn during the warm-up and racing itself to make you guys instantly recognizable. HPK Spring Meet On the weekend of Friday September 17, HPK will be holding their annual Spring Meet. This is a meet that has something for everyone and we would like to encourage as many of you as possible to attend. Senior swimmers not travelling to Sydney with the Waikato team will be fully tapered for this meet so it will provide a great opportunity to swim fast in a short course pool. For younger swimmers it provides an opportunity to compete against some different swimmers outside the Waikato. The meet finishes on Sunday morning and it is hoped that most of the swimmers and their parents will be able to stay round and go ice skating with the team. Keep an eye on the notice boards around the pool for more information about this club trip. Richard Sutton Head coach |
Club / Family Trip 17th – 19th SeptemberTo celebrate the end of the winter season training, the club is organizing a trip to the Honda Cars Spring Carnival, run by the Howick Pakuranga Swimming Club. The meet is to be held at the pool at Lloyd Elsmore Park in Pakuranga Auckland. This is a short course carnival held in a 25 metre pool. A flyer listing the events is on our club notice board at our pool or can be found on the http://www.swiminfo.co.nz website. Entries close 27 August. The first session is Friday night the 17th September, with warm up commencing at 5.30pm. The meet then continues through Saturday finishing with a morning session on Sunday the 19th September. On completion of the meet we are hoping to arrange for a group lunch and then to go ice-skating at the Paradise Skating Rink. The Club will partially subsidize these social activities. We would like the club to stay together as a group as much as is possible and some accommodation has already been booked. This trip is for all swimmers of all ages and their families, Mum, Dad, brothers and sisters. Coach Steve Hay will be travelling with the club. Please keep the dates of 17th-19th September in mind, as we will need to have an idea of numbers who are interested reasonably soon. A sheet has been put up on the notice board down at the pool for you to register your interest. This will be the last event of the winter training season following which most swimmers will go on a 2 week break with the summer training season commencing on the 4th October. If you have any queries or wish any further information please do not hesitate to contact myself or Steve Hay. Marijke Gudsell phone 8550 884 Coaching Convenor. |
FundraisingThe garage sale was held on June 26th at the same venue we have used previously and was a great success. There was a hall bursting with saleable items and we raised a $1,100.00 for our efforts. A raffle was organised by Jan Barr to tie in with our winter meet. This again was very successful, raising $837.00. Thanks for the items contributed. There are still chocolates for sale: see Jan Barr. The club has applied to Waikato Stadium to do a clean up after the NPC game being held on Friday 24 September. We were successful in our application and we are required to be at the Stadium main gate Saturday 25 September at 7.15 am to begin. The stadium is estimating a large crowd and the clean up on Saturday will require at least 40 which includes swimmers and adults. The money that the club will get, approximately $1000, will go towards 13 new stop watches for the club. These stop watches are used at club nights, our Xmas carnival and our Winter carnival. This will benefit all swimmers in the club and it is very important that as many people attend so that we can get the job done in as short as time possible. There will be a Quiz Night Friday 27 August. The one last year was heaps of fun, so please support this one. More details soon. We have approached Bunnings about having a sausage sizzle there. The date we requested has been taken but we will follow up with another one. We are looking at the possibility of having a Swimathon. This is something that club members at all levels can be involved in. This is tentatively booked in for the month of October. As you can see there is a lot planned between here and Xmas but the fundraising is extremely important and it takes everybody in the club to do as much as they possibly can. Please keep checking the notice board regularly for further information regarding fundraising events. Helen Schrieber Fundraising Convenor |
Blue BooksSwim Waikato Blue Books for the current season will be available shortly for $5. These are an invaluable reference but people are reminded to check swim meet flyers on the club notice board for club closing dates and for any changes to event numbers, starting times etc. Blue books can be purchased from the shop at the Hamilton pool during training hours. GearWith an expected increase in the number of outside schools and groups that will be using the pool during the next 9 months, it is important that the presentation of the facility is clean and tidy and that the swimmers gear is kept separate and secure. We would like to get the lock-up area at the end of the pool cleaned out and those swimmers that keep their gear in there to claim it. They can then either take it home with them and bring it to each session or use one of the plastic storage cubes the club is purchasing. Swimmers have the option of paying $5 for a named storage cube, which will be kept in the lock-up area. Any gear that is not claimed the club will hold onto but it will be put in a separate area. Likewise, any gear that is left at the end of the pool after training will also be placed in a separate locked area. The surplus gear will be accessible on a trade scheme for swimmers coming up through the squads. Club NightsClub nights will be starting at the beginning of Term 4. These are held on a fortnightly basis. Points are awarded for entering races and improving times. These count towards Club Trophies awarded at the end of the season. Times swum at club nights also count for stickers on the Achievement Certificates. Dates will be posted on the notice board before the end of this term.
