Message from the President

A bit like the Queen's Christmas message, .......  ahem well not quite. (ed)

Well another year has raced by and we are well into a new one.  We are now in the height of the swimming season in terms of swim meet competitions.  We have seen some great successes in the season so far at regional and national levels.  Some swimmers and supporters went to Melbourne which gained all concerned some international experience. We are looking to swimmers achieving  well in the remaining swim meets.

Regards Wayne Walker (Club President)

Welcome Pool Attendants for 03/04

We wish to welcome pool attendants Andrea Grayburn, Stephen Hay, Rachel Lornie, and C Bardsley for the summer season.

Look out for Fundraising Raffles

Hisense Distribution Ltd (NZ) has arranged to provide some televisions for the club to raffle as a fundraising promotion.  Hisense has supplied a 14" TV which is being raffled to help raise funds for the benefit of all the swimmers in the club.  Tickets are $2.00 each and the raffle will be drawn when sold.  The winner will be contacted directly, the result will be posted on our website and printed in the next newsletter.  A larger TV will be provided later in the year.

Next Club nights

The next club night will be Thursday 12th  Feb 04, then the next will be 26 Feb 04. Haven't those house events at the end of each club night been a lot of fun.  We hope to see you all there on the night.

Melbourne Trip 2004

On the 2nd/3rd of January 2004, 14 swimmers, four parents and a coach flew to Melbourne for 10 days, five days of training and five days of competition in the age group section of the Victoria State Champs.

We stayed in the Punt Hill Apartments conveniently located on St Kilda Road. The five days of training were at the Prahran outdoor 50 metre pool. To get to this pool required catching two trams which was relatively easy, except on the weekend when trams are less frequent.

The swimmers had several trips into the city shopping, visiting the markets and a trip to the movies. The focus was however very much on swimming, so training twice daily and resting in the middle of the day meant these trips were reasonably short.

The Victoria State Champs were held at the Melbourne Aquatic Centre in Albert Park, started on 8th January. The long days started with breakfast at 6:00 am and finished with bed around 10:00 pm with a 3 hour break at midday

The swimmers did very well with all doing P B’s and several making finals which was a big achievement. At this meet, like our own Waikato Champs, only two visitors are allowed to swim in the finals. As there were many clubs not only from other states within Australia, but also other countries it was a big achievement to be one of the two fastest "visitor" swimmers. Three of our swimmers did exceptionally well. Ryan Swart won the silver medal in the 14 year old boys 200 metre Freestyle. Cristina White won the bronze medal in the 13 years and under girls 200 metre Butterfly. Claire Schrieber won the bronze medal in the 16 year old girls 400 metre Individual Medley.

As we were returning on the 7.30pm flight on Monday 12thJanuary, we were able to have a few hours of free time in St Kilda on our last day, which was enjoyed by all. A very tired group of people arrived back in Auckland at 12.55am on Tuesday 13th January with one and a half days to sleep and prepare for our own Waikato Champs.

It was a great experience for all who went, and the benefits for the swimmers can be seen in their performances both in Melbourne and back home at the Waikato Champs.

Many thanks to all those people who supported the swimmers in their fundraising to get to Melbourne.

Head Coaches Comment

It has been a busy few months since our last newsletter.  In December we fielded teams at Matamata and at both the Auckland Junior and Auckland Senior Champs.  The swimmers representing the Club at the Auckland Senior Champs swam particularly well, everyone made finals and many medals were won.

In early January 14 swimmers traveled to the Victoria State Champs, this was a tough meet and but once again swimmers were able to record many PBs.  Three medals were won against some stiff competition.

All the swimmers who didn’t travel to Melbourne were invited to attend the summer development camp run by Steve.  This was an opportunity for some team building activities and to focus on race skills.

Two days after we arrived back those 14 swimmers joined the rest of the Hamilton team at the Waikato Champs.  From a coaching perspective we had a great meet with swimmers of all ages able to record good PBs throughout the entire meet.  This is a reflection on the huge amount of effort that these swimmers have put in to get themselves I n great shape leading into the Nationals season.  Steve and I were especially pleased with the team support all the team members had for each other.  Currently Hamilton have a slender lead in the points table, the final part of the Waikato Champs is the 50’s and relays 13th of March, to hold the lead we need you all involved.  Every swimmer in the club is capable of swimming 50m.  For those swimmers not attending any National events The Waikato Classics on March 6th, is a great meet to be involved with as swimmers who have attended Nationals cannot attend meaning that there is some great racing and anyone has a chance to win.

We are into the second week of normal school hours training.  Please make a real effort to get to the pool on time as it is extremely disruptive to have swimmers entering the pool late. Remember that the session start times are the time that swimmers should be hopping into the pool not walking in the gate.

A final word of thanks from Steve and I to all the parents and supporters who helped out with the various activities over the last two months, without your time and effort none of these things would be possible.

Richard Sutton.
